The market, post Covid-19, is deemed to be incredibly competitive. Therefore, replenishing knowledge on effective, viable treatments for everyday aesthetic needs is vital. Today, Mesotherapy is the go-to treatment for cosmetic patients due to its non-invasive nature, cost-effectiveness and evident benefits. Similarly, for practitioners it is a relatively easy technique to master with minimal costs. When carried out with the right expertise in formulation and application, it can produce highly satisfying results. This therapy can be utilised for a multitude of purposes as it aims to nourish the skin from within.
“Nowadays patients are shifting from invasive treatments to non-invasive treatments with minimal downtime. Mesotherapy meets patient’s needs with noticeable results at affordable costs” Dr Azaiba Kara
What is mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy uses FDA approved active ingredients formulated as “cocktails” which are micro-injected into the mesoderm, namely the middle layer of the skin, to produce visible improvements in the patients’ appearance.
It is primarily administered in minute doses using fine needles over or near the affected site to deliver corrective treatment to a specific area of the body. This cosmetic treatment has been used regularly for several decades for a variety of purposes in treating the scalp, face and body. This painless injection technique can be tailored to each patient’s individual needs using a range of minerals, vitamins, amino acids, nucleic acids and co-enzymes.
Additionally, it can be administered via electroporation or electropermeabilization. This is a molecular biology technique in which an electrical field is applied to the cells to increase the permeability of the cell membrane, allowing chemicals, drugs or DNA to be introduced into the cell. This is named “no needle mesotherapy” and is an effective, woundless and safe treatment.
What Makes Mesotherapy So Beneficial?
Mesotherapy is a painless and affordable treatment that can be conducted for a range of the following indications:
- Skin Rejuvenation
This involves the treatment of scars, flaccid skin, wrinkles, acne and more. Hydroxy acids are anti-inflammatory proteins that exfoliate the skin, increases cellular turn over and stimulates fibroblast to produce elastin and collagen. Vitamin A regulates cellular turn over of the skin and its keratinisation. Vitamin C acts as an anti-oxidant and synthesises collagen, inhibits melanin production to reduce hyper pigmentation. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and aids in anti-aging. Vitamin K regulates the microcirculation of skin. Di Methyl Amino Ethanol is a powerful antioxidant that also increases muscle tone and achieves the tightening effect of skin.
The direct delivery of vitamins, minerals and amino acids into the skin, has a nourishing and rejuvenating effect. It restores hydration, promotes collagen and elastin production, and boosts microcirculation. As a result, the skin looks firmer, rested and radiant.
- Hyperpigmentation
Kojic acid-kojic acts as skin lightening agent by inhibiting tyrosine. Licorice extract is an anti-irritant which is good for sensitive skin and inhibits melanin production. Tranexamic acid inhibits tyrosinase, acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps to maintain the health of our natural skin barrier. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant that combats pigmentation, has a brightening effect and stimulates collagen. Gulathione reduces the formation of eumelain which presents as black/brown melanin.
- Acne scars
Mesotherapy helps by stimulating new skin cells to grow and repair the scarred area. Unlike common acne treatments, mesotherapy allows the products to penetrate the skin further enabling more effective treatment.
- Hair loss
The combination of treatments depends on the underlying cause of hair loss, however platelet rich plasma shows positive results in androgenic alopecia. The infusion of nutrients and medication helps tackle hair thinning and hair loss. Using a special cocktail, the scalp is given a vitamin boost which can improve blood circulation for better nourishment of the hair follicles. What makes mesotherapy so uniquely effective is that it infuses a therapeutic solution directly into the scalp, unlike topical solutions such as serums or sprays, or oral medication for that matter. This treatment also helps delay the onset of alopecia or male pattern baldness. It is a good practice to start treatment with the first signs of hair loss as this retards or stops the advance of thinning.
- Cellulite
The objectives include to modify the metabolism of adipocytes, increase lymphatic drainage, improve ischameia and fibrosis and improve skin tone. Injecting directly into the areas of cellulite results in even, smooth skin and a dramatic reduction in cellulite in the most natural way.
I would not include this as we are concerned with aesthetic indications
Although, Mesotherapy is not a definitive science, colleagues all over the world are discovering new indications, formulations and delivery methods. Our collective effort improves our knowledge and break the barriers limiting treatment outcomes. Practitioners, with practice, can master the skill of conducting this non-invasive procedure and provide patients with an effective treatment option.
